Children First Academy
Have you ever given any thought to what happens to the children of the homeless? How do they attend school when their parents are moving from place to place seeking temporary shelter? What about clothing and medical care? It is the heartbreaking reality that there are thousands of homeless people in Arizona, many with children who are hungry, in need of medical care, and not attending school.
Children First Academy is a school in central Phoenix providing a safe and cheerful place for children of homeless families to meet their basic needs. The school provides transportation to school, changing bus routes on a daily basis to accommodate the transient families. A healthy breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided to all students. Community donations make it possible for monthly visits to the school’s clothing room, where children receive much needed clothing, shoes, and hygiene kits. Medical and dental care is provided to students through a partnership with Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Community Dental. Social services are also provided to students and their families.
This school is a beacon of light in our community. Currently 288 students attend the school, with the number fluctuating throughout the year. The school needs donations, such as non-perishable food items, clothing, books, and people willing to volunteer to read to students or mentor a child one-on-one. The smiling faces of the students and staff are evidence that this school is a success.
As parents, this cause is near and dear to our hearts and we make a donation to the school with every closing.
